In Memory of Ravenwood Big Ben
(Royalton Herbie & Meredith Rowena)
1984-1997
"Ben" at the Lippitt
Country Show in
Tunbridge VT.
August 1997
We purchased Ben as a colt in 1984 from a Lippitt Morgan Breeder in Bliss, NY. Both sire
and dam were present on this farm. So I was introduced to Royalton Herbie and
Merideth Rowena, both grand horses. "Ben", was a handsome liver chestnut stallion with
a beautiful disposition. He was, as many Lippitts are, an eager learner. Shown in-hand
at local Morgan shows he earned ribbons easily. When Ben was 7 we took him to
Vermont to the Lippitt Country Show. I entered him several driving competitions,
including the Log Pulling Contest. This was the first time he had ever done this type of
pulling and even though he became entangled in the lines I was proud of him
because he remained cool and collected as I removed the lines from around his legs.
That was however the last time we were to show Ben, his career as a showman and sire
were ended. He met an untimely and unfortunate demise later that fall. Ben escaped
from his paddock and as all horses, he ran for the fun of it, but unfortunately he ran into
the road and was hit by a passing car. My friend Ben's life ended that night as a piece
of shrapnel from the car severed his jugular vein and he died before I could reach
him. Ben's get are mostly half Lippitt to which we have two here at Overlands,
and . Both mares with tremendous heart to
excel. Diverse as they have successfully shown in western pleasure, in hand, in
parades, as trail horse, gaming and team penning, these two mares have the gusto to
want to be on top! Ben will continue to live on through their offspring which seem to
possess these same wonderful qualities. ( , and
. This lineage of the Royalton Herbie could of been lost to the half Lippitt
world, but that spring before Ben died I purchased our Lippitt mare Barre Brittany.
Brittany gave birth to a filly, "Legacy". She is in foal to Mic Mac Ransome. The feelings
of having a special horse in your life can only mean something to those who have
owned them. And then to have that special horse be your stallion adds passion to this
feeling. I still miss Ben but have moved on and with the qualities of Ben's offspring
added with the qualities of our new stallion, I have renewed hopes of more great
horses to come in the future!
